China’s Emerald Dairy has started building a milk powder processing plant in Heilongjiang Province in the north of the country.
The company said the US$20m facility will be based in Hailun, 120 miles north of its headquarters in the city of Harbin.
The plant, which is set to be ready early next year, is also located 80 miles south of Emerald’s existing facility in Bei’an.
The Hailun site will double Emerald’s annual milk powder production to around 18,000 tons. Emerald said production could be extended by a further 9,000 tons as demand for milk powder grows in China.
CEO Yang Yong Shan said: “We believe the new facility, located in the proximity of the capital city, will further strengthen our efforts to expand our geographical presence going forward.”
