A senior food-safety official has reportedly committed suicide following a government probe into suspected corruption.

Local media yesterday (12 August) reported that Wu Jianping jumped from a Beijing building a day after  being questioned by officials.

Jianping, who was in charge of licensing food-production companies at the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), reportedly committed suicide on 2 August.

AQSIQ is a ministerial-level agency responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of products, including foods that are imported and exported.

It is understood that Communist Party discipline officials launched an investigation of Jianping following reports of his “personal financial problems”.
