China has arrested over 770 people and opened more than 600 criminal investigations in a crackdown on unsafe food over the last two months.
“Government departments across the country have placed high pressure on illegal manufacturers and detected many significant cases,” said China’s food safety watchdog, the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The body said its actions, which took place between August and mid-October, were designed to act as a deterrent to illegal activities in the future.
China is under pressure to reassure the international community about its food safety after a wave of safety incidents abroad were traced back to the country.
It has also announced tougher regulations on pesticides.
