US fastfood giant McDonald’s is going head-to-head with its Hong Kong local fastfood rivals by serving Chinese rice dishes.
The move comes as Hong Kong foodservice suppliers battle to keep sales up despite the island’s deep economic recession. Local rivals Café to Coral, Fairwood and Maxim’s all serve popular rice dishes, and McDonald’s believes it has spotted an opportunity to muscle in on their market.
The company says it is simply trying to offer customers more choice: “Our decision to offer a rice-based alternative is a result of what our customers are asking for,” McDonald’s said in response to questions from the Associated Press.
“The rice menu fits seamlessly into the dietary habits of Hong Kong Chinese with rice as their staple food.”
The new dishes on McDonald’s menu contain rice, chicken, broccoli and sauce, and costs HK$22 (US$2.85).
