The State General Administration of Quality Supervision and Quarantine has launched a campaign to combat the dissemination of fake branded food products.

The move, it explained, is a bid to cut down on food poisoning and boost food safety in the run-up to the Chinese New Year festivities this spring. This year, New Year falls on the 12 February.

In the fist step of the clampdown, the administration issued a notice to local quality supervision and quarantine departments, which said that they should take legal action against any illegal production and selling of unsafe food that they discover.

According to the People’s Daily newspaper, the notice called for closer supervision over food manufacturing,  to prevent any unsafe products from entering the market. Food producers can meanwhile assist authorities by clearly labelling their products.
