Meat purchases at wet markets in China dropped 8.6% between the first and third quarters this year as sales at supermarkets increased, a recent survey has found.

The survey of 1000 households carried out by Taylor Nelson Sofres found that wet markets still controlled the majority of the fresh meat market, but this majority fell from 87.1% in the first quarter to 78.5% in the third.

In the third quarter of last year, wet markets accounted for 86.4% of fresh meat sales, reported the Standard.

Between the first and third quarter of this year Li Ka-shing’s Park n Shop supermarket chain increased its fresh meat market share from 7% to 13.8%, while Dairy Farm’s Wellcome supermarket chain increased its fresh meat market share to 5.7% from 3.7%.
