It did not give details of the products involved. The probe comes two days after President Obama imposed tariffs on Chinese tires.

China’s poultry industry has long complained of unfair trade practices by the US. In March, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce & Animal By-Products (CCCFNA) called for a ban on imports of US poultry in response to a congressional spending bill restricting China’s poultry sales.

In June, Beijing asked the World Trade Organization to set up a panel to investigate US restrictions. The US accounts for more than 75% of China’s poultry imports, and 7% of the country’s CNY200bn(US$) poultry market, according to the CCCFNA.

The ministry said the investigation was in accordance with WTO rules and Chinese laws. It added that China firmly opposes protectionism.
