US pharmaceutical giant Wyeth is to spend US$280m on building a production site in China for infant-formula milk powder.

The facility will be located in the Chinese province of Jiangsu and Wyeth said the plant would also be used for a raft of other nutritional products.

Wyeth chairman Robert Essner said: “China is now the fastest-growing market for Wyeth’s worldwide nutritional business. When completed, this facility will enable us to meet the growing demand for nutritional products in the Chinese market.”

Construction is scheduled to start this month and the plant is expected to be up and running by 2010.
