Billa, the Central European arm of German retail giant Rewe, plans to open its first small supermarket in the Czech Republic.
The 400 square metre pilot store will open in Brno, the country’s second-largest city, a spokesperson for Billa confirmed today (30 July).
Billa, which runs 200 supermarkets in the Czech Republic, has yet to create a name for the new store format and the company is cautious about whether it will open more outlets in the coming months.
The spokesperson declined to say how many of the smaller-format stores the chain plans to open, noting that any expansion depends on the performance of the store in Brno.
She did, however, dismiss reports that the new format would compete directly with Tesco’s Express stores or the Zabka chain operated by Slovakia’s Penta.
