The Danish Consumer Council has reported leading dairy concern Arla Foods to the country’s food authorities over its famous Lurpak butter.

The council says consumers believe Lurpak is pure butter although Arla is now selling a Lurpak product that contains vegetable oil. “The consumer council believes it’s misleading to use the Lurpak brand name on a mixed product because a large number of consumers will confuse the product with butter,” said the council’s Camilla Udsen.

Udsen said Arla, which took over the Lurpak brand several years ago, has a responsibility to maintain the product as pure butter.

“If the trend continues to cheese and yoghurt-like products, we would obviously be talking about lower-quality products. You have to remember that vegetable fat is a lot cheaper than milk fat,” said Udsen.
