“We can be bigger here (in Sweden) than in Denmark,” Thomas Hansen, deputy head of Netto’s Swedish arm, told Reuters.

Netto plans to open 125 to 150 new outlets in Sweden over the next five years, compared to its previous target of 100 new stores. The company currently has 59 Swedish stores. Eventually, Netto plans to have between 300 and 400 outlets in Sweden, compared with the 362 it currently operates in Denmark.

Hansen said competition in Sweden is not as fierce as in Denmark because there are relatively few hard discounters there.

“One is beginning to see that chains like ICA go out and say that they will cut prices. The market is beginning to focus more and more on the price, even in areas that have been a bit more expensive,” he told Reuters.
