Swiss dairy firm Emmi plans to invest in a local facility to replace an ageing cheese wing as it aims to expand production capabilities.

Emmi is ploughing CHF50m (US$54.6m) into the project at Emmen, the village from where the business originated in the canton of Lucerne, Hochdorf district, to replace a 40-year-old part of the building. The site produces the Luzerner Rahmkäse cheese brand popular in Switzerland, among others.

“In the last ten years, the milk processed into cheese at the Emmen site has doubled, and demand is expected to continue to rise in the years ahead,” Emmi said in a statement today (12 November).

Zurich-listed Emmi said the plans for the facility have been cleared with respect to the potential environmental impact by the authorities in Emmen, and work will begin in the next few days. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Marc Heim, Emmi’s vice-president for Switzerland, said: “Emmen and Central Switzerland are where Emmi was born, and Swiss cheese is one of the key pillars of our growth strategy. A large, modern, resource-conserving cheese dairy with short transport routes to our milk suppliers is the perfect complement to our speciality cheeses from commercial cheese dairies.”

The business recently expanded its presence in the US by taking a majority stake in New York-based Indulge Desserts, adding to last year’s deal for a similar company, Pasticceria Quadrifoglio. It has also entered the dairy-free category with the launch of a new brand, Beleaf.
