The EU has confirmed it will suspend two duties on cereals used by the EU meat industry to ease rising input costs.

The EUR12 (US$16.32) per tonne duties charged on an import quota of 2.9m tonnes of low and medium soft wheat will be removed until 1 July – as will EUR16 per tonne duties on an import quota of 306,000 tonnes for feed barley. These duty free quotas will be available to all exporters worldwide.

Speaking the EU’s agriculture management committee backed the suspension, EU agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolos said: “While prices remain high…we have an obligation…to help ease the situation.”
