The European Commission is encouraging the food industry to take advantage of new subsidies being made available under the EU Agenda 2000 programme to promote quality produce and environment friendly production.
In a statement, Brussels has pressed the use of an extra ‘extensification premium’ for beef producers using low stocking densities, special ‘agri-environmental’ payments in return for specific ecological performance promises, additional payments for food production in isolated highland areas and financial support for the marketing of quality products, within rural development programmes.
