The European Commission has added six food products to its protected geographical indication lists.

The move follows a surge of decisions to grant traditionally made European food products PDI protection, preventing them from being copied by food manufacturers based outside the regions where they are traditionally produced.

Today’s (25 July) new additions include Portuguese pork sausages Butelo de Vinhais (also called ‘Bucho de Vinhais’) and Chouriço de Ossos de Vinhais.

The EU has also added Spanish cheese Afuega’l Pitu, Spanish marzipan Mazapán de Toledo and French lamb to Agneau de Lozère to the list.

French onion Oignon doux des Cévennes also makes the list.
