The new emergency intervention system, where the European Commission will buy
unsold beef carcasses at 70% of their value, for storage or rendering, has been
approved. Brussels has set minimum prices for each EU Member State; when prices
fall below them, funds will be released, covering an unlimited amount of meat
until December. As it stands, beef producers in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Spain,
France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Austria, will be able to apply
for funds.

This new scheme replaces the existing regime, which has only funded the destruction
of meat. Britain is not covered by this particular scheme.
