Europe’s hard-pressed dairy farmers are increasing their protests across the EU despite being granted special emergency subsidies.
Yesterday (21 September), a group of producers set hay on fire and spilt milk in front of the European Commission headquarters in Brussels.
Similar protests and blockades were organised in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, as well as France.
Protests are being coordinated by the European Milk Board, which threatened: “Today has clearly shown, how powerful and how well organised European dairy farmers are to show their concerns to the public.”
In Brussels protesters delivered a note demanding further assistance from EU agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.
