Declining bee and insect populations could have a heavy impact on produce production, new research findings from the EU has suggested.

A study, conducted by a Franco-German scientific team coordinated by Germany’s Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, concluded that the pollination services provided by insects are worth EUR153bn (US$220.6bn) per annum. This figure, researchers said, is equivalent to 9.5% of world agricultural food production value.
Bee diseases have ravaged populations in recent years, and should bees die out, “the production of three crop categories (fruits, vegetables and stimulants) would fall well below current consumption levels”, said a European Commission note on the study.
This would hit net importers as EU fruit consumption currently exceeds production by 20%.
