European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) scientists have scotched decades of received wisdom that says drinking milk and eating dairy products boosts the strength of teeth.

In a study, EFSA’s panel on dietetic products, nutrition and allergies said there was insufficient evidence linking dairy consumption with stronger teeth.

This was despite a review of four studies showing children drinking milk having fewer caries (the precursor of cavities) compared to those who do not drink milk.

“A cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of milk or cheese and dental health in children,” concluded the panel.
