EU scientists have rejected requests by the South African government to lift import restrictions on South African citrus fruit.

South African citrus is banned in the UK over infestations of Guignardia citricarpa Kiely, a fungus that causes citrus black spot disease.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has dismissed arguments that the fungus only thrives in South African climates and not in Europe because its climatic zones are different.

EFSA also wants additional controls in Europe and South Africa to prevent the disease spreading.
