The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has called for improvements to the collection of EU salmonella statistics to help food manufacturers and regulators trace outbreaks to contaminated meat and dairy supplies.

EFSA said there were particular problems regarding meat, with data collated at EU and national levels not allowing “clear identification of meat categories, such as carcasses, fresh meat and products, minced meat and meat preparations” involved in outbreaks.

EFSA blamed the way foods are categorised differently in member states.

The watchdog also warned that tracing of outbreaks and the issuing of consumer advice was made more difficult by food handling and processing practices information being “rarely available”.
