Independent food safety experts have been asked to help the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) deal with its growing workload of risk assessments.
It is creating a database of specialists which it can call upon to help develop informed advice on sometimes controversial issues, such as the safety of GM foodstuffs.
The database would “further reinforce EFSA’s capacity to deliver high-quality independent scientific advice and assist the authority with its growing workload,” said a statement from the EU agency.
“It will also contribute to EFSA’s responsiveness in providing risk assessment advice to Europe’s decision-makers,” the EFSA said.
The agency will work with EU member states to identify experts for its database.
