The EU Council of Ministers has ruled that dairy manufacturers cannot use labels that claim that their products strengthen children’s teeth.
Formally accepting a European Commission decision, ministers rejected the health claim under new EU rules regulating children’s marketing.
The slogan “Dairy foods (milk & cheese) promote dental health in children” and similar claims will be banned.
Ministers also agreed that the claim “Three portions of dairy food everyday, as part of a balanced diet, may help promote a healthy body weight during childhood and adolescence” should be banned.
The Council also rejected a series of child health claims for foods containing the additives docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), including claims that they help vision, mental development, calming and serenity to children.
