The European Commission has moved to boost EU dairy production, proposing a 2% increase in milk production quotas from April next year.

This would – the Commission said in a statement – “meet growing demand both within the European Union and on global markets”.
The increase comes as the Commission is proposing regular dairy quota increases before abolishing all controls in 2015.
EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said: “We have seen a sharp rise in milk prices over the past year and a growing call for higher quotas. In the coming years, demand for high value-added dairy products – particularly cheese – will continue.”
EU analysis says that between 2003 and 2007, expanding cheese and fresh milk production absorbed an additional 5.5m tonnes of milk and that between 2007 and 2014, an additional 8m tonnes will be needed.
