Austria is coming under pressure to allow foreign EU organisations to inspect its organic food production industry.


In November 2007, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) said that Austria must permit these inspections. 


However, the European Commission is probing Vienna’s response amidst concerns it has done nothing.


Current Austrian rules say EU organic food inspection bodies must maintain an office in Austria to inspect Austrian organic produce.


The Commission said it had received only one “insufficiently detailed communication on the reforms under consideration”.
