The European Parliament has overwhelmingly approved a permanent ban on the food additive E425 konjac in jelly confectionery because of the risks of children and old people choking on such sweets.

MEPs amended the proposal, bringing forward the ban to six months after the directive enters into force, probably in a few weeks. The parliament rejected an amendment calling on the Commission to review the safety levels for all food additives, to amend them in line of the needs of children’s health.

However, this followed the securing of a promise from the European Commission that such a review would take place in any case, in accordance with the existing legislation.
