Denmark’s reforming EU agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel has relinquished her power to shape reform of the EU’s Common Agriculture Policy.
As member states scramble to nominate members of the new Commission, which takes office in the New Year, Fischer Boel told the European Parliament’s agriculture committee that existing discussion papers on CAP reform and cutting spending were now “in the bin”.
She added it was “up to the next Commission to present its views” on CAP reform.
This will doubtless encourage the committee – which has often backed EU food production subsidies. However, the identity of the next agriculture commissioner is still not known.
