The global recession, falling demand and growing gaps between cost and price have further damaged pigmeat profits, noted a Paris-written report for the EU Council of Ministers.

France, claiming support from other unnamed member states, wants the Commission to temporarily reintroduce export refunds, which are generally not available.

France claimed refunds will “facilitate a significant recovery of market prices in the pigmeat sector with a view to at least partly offsetting the considerable losses suffered by pig farmers”.

Its paper said an A/H1N1 swine flu surge in the autumn would probably further depress pigmeat demand.
