The effective incorporation of the ten eastern and southern European countries joining the European Union (EU) next May in its Common Agricultural Policy will be a key priority of the Irish government’s EU presidency, which starts 1 January.

In its published programme, Dublin said it would “work closely with the new Member States on any procedural or substantive issues that affect them particularly.”

Other priorities will include concluding negotiations on reforming the common market organisation for olive oil and securing agreement over new Commission farm animal welfare proposals made by Irish health Commissioner David Byrne.

Dublin also promised to continue examining possible reforms to the EU sugar regime.
