Plans for a compulsory EU-wide logo for organic products are to be delayed until 2010.
A failure by the European Commission to realise that the current voluntary EU logo for organic products could be confused with other existing symbols means that a law making the logo compulsory will be delayed.
Under a regulation agreed last year, the EU symbol was to be compulsory for pre-packaged organic foods from 1 January next year but the Commission now wants this delayed until July 2010.
The Commission said the old symbol “is easily confusable with other logos, like the EU logos for quality production”.
It will next month launch a competition to design a new logo.
