The European Parliament has voted for EU governments to have power to expand their milk quotas, should some member states with weak dairy industries not produce their full allocation.

Amending the EU’s ‘health check’ reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy, MEPs said: “Member states [should] increase their quotas temporarily if the quotas of other member states are under-used.”


This will be welcomed by the European Commission, which has faced opposition from EP agriculture committee members to its planned 1% annual increase of quotas until 2013-14, ahead of their 2015 abolition.


MEPs also backed this plan, although they asked Brussels to review the situation in 2010.
