A majority of European Union (EU) member states support the introduction of a compulsory ‘EU ORGANIC’ label for certified organic foodstuffs that are produced in the EU.

The backing for the idea came at a meeting of the EU Council of Ministers for agriculture, which debated European Commission plans to overhaul and rationalise EU organic production rules.

Some of the ministers backing the eco-label scheme called for a compulsory logo, rather than just a slogan, while others stressed that such a logo should “not mislead the consumer” and associated labels “shall provide clear information on the content of the product”.
