A political deal has agreed the text of a new EU regulation on the composition of infant formula, baby food, diet replacements and special medical foods.

The Cyprus government – holding the EU’s rotating presidency – said last night (20 November) an agreement had been reached between the European Parliament and EU Council of Ministers.

The regulation establishes a procedure enabling the EU to decide what substances can be added to these foods. It also lays down rules on labelling to ensure consumers and parents are not misled by packaging information.

Cyprus’ EU ambassador George Zodiates said: “We were determined to close a fair deal [offering] maximum protection”. The deal must be ratified by ministers and MEPs. The regulation could become law by next March.”
