EU ministers have pushed for a major overhaul of the way authorised genetically modified food products are monitored to allow for developments in the understanding of their impact on heath and the environment.
Yesterday’s (5 December) meeting of the EU Council of Ministers called on national governments to develop their own monitoring programmes, and feed information to a central point, almost certainly the European Food Safety Authority.
It would “consolidate…the main findings…in a single year”, and “prepare an assessment report indicating whether and how the conditions of the consent should be revised or the consent should be terminated”.
