EU ministers have scrapped a complex system of state aid payable for the supply of school milk that will in particular scrap special high subsidies to high fat milk.
The European Commission, which put forward the proposal to the European Council of Ministers, said: “This is no longer appropriate in an age when obesity is becoming a major public health problem.” The new rate will be EUR18.15 (US$25.70)/100kg for all categories of milk.
Meanwhile, ministers also signed off a serious of other measure related to the dairy sector.
Ministers scrapped EU aid payable for putting cream or skimmed milk powder into storage. They also signed a law to replace 27 national definitions for quality butter with one EU standard, while ministers also approved an EU-wide minimum fat free protein ratio of 34% for milk powders and condensed milk.
