The European Commission has approved the use across the EU of three types of genetically modified maize.

The maize, which will be used for food import and processing and animal feed, are 1507xNK603; NK603 x MON810; and 59122 Herculex RW.

In addition, a GM sugar beet, H7-1, was approved by the Commission for use as food and feed produced from it.

The Commission was left to decide after the Council of Ministers was locked in a stalemate over whether to allow these products into the EU,

The GMOs in question received positive safety assessments from the European Food Safety Authority and underwent a full EU authorisation procedure. The authorisations are valid for 10 years.
