Coordinated by European research and development network EUREKA, the system involves the chips recording signals transmitted by ships using GPS signals within a five-kilometre range.

This GPSFISH system tag stores the sonar’s position and the signal’s date and time. This, said a EUREKA note “turns the tagged fish into an important research instrument, gathering vital information on the species.”

The 46 by 15 millimetre tags are usually fixed next to the dorsal fin and are made from environmentally friendly components.
