A top executive at Unilever has warned of a looming clash over raw material supplies between a food industry serving a growing global population and a biofuel sector fighting global warming.

“Land availability for both food and fuel is very questionable,” Guenther Buck told a European Parliament green group hearing:

Buck, Unilever managing director for raw materials, warned that without food production becoming more efficient, an additional 2.5bn hectares of land could be needed to cover an estimated 50% increase in food demand by 2030. “

“And this is before biofuel production sets in,” added Buck, noting that, by 2020, the EU wants biofuels to constitute at least 10% of fuels used in new vehicles.
