The risk that American cattle are infected with BSE is high, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded, and without changes to US rendering or feeding practice, “the probability of cattle to be (pre-clinically or clinically) infected with BSE persistently increases”.

Assessing data from 1980, EFSA experts noted BSE was probably imported into USA in the mid-1980’s, being later rendered into feed. The authority claimed that the risk of BSE exposure “grew significantly in the mid-90’s when domestic cattle, infected by imported meat and bone meal” were processed for food.


One of a series of checks by EFSA on BSE infection, the agency has concluded that similarly serious situations exist in South Africa, Canada and Mexico.
