The European Union has stood by its policy on genetically modified organisms in response to the US decision to go ahead with filing a case against the EU at the World Trade Organisation.
Last week the US requested the formation of a WTO dispute panel in order to try to force the EU to accept new biotech crops.
“We very much regret this decision,” EU spokeswoman Beate Gminder was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. “We think that our system of GMO authorisation is clear, transparent and nondiscriminatory and complies with WTO rules.”
The EU recently approved new rules on labelling and traceability of GMOs in a bid to end the unofficial moratorium. The US, however, argued that the new system would also act as a trade barrier.
