The European Free Trade Area (EFTA) of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein is planning to join the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

A meeting of the European Economic Area council has noted that “EFTA participation…was close to being finalised”, and “looked forward” to a final decision.

An EFTA note stressed the four-country block could pose scientific questions to EFSA and benefit from the agency’s risk and scientific assessments.

The EFSA was established as an agency of the European Union in 2002.
