Jobs within Unilever’s European business could go as the consumer goods giant restructures its brand development in the region.

Unilever said it was consulting with staff on the plan, which will see it set up a single innovation department for brand development for all its product categories in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

A spokesperson for Unilever in France, where it is reported over 150 jobs could be under threat, told just-food: “With this project, Unilever’s European organisation would align itself with other parts of its business around the world, where this type of structure has produced excellent results.”

The spokesperson refused to be drawn on the precise impact on jobs in France and added: “This project concerns Unilever France, as well as other European countries. The French posts concerned are mainly located at the headquarters of Unilever France in Rueil Malmaison, where employees from around the world are working to develop European innovations. The largest part of the project looks at the transfer of these posts to Rotterdam. Employees who so request can transfer to this European centre.”
