US meat-alternative business Beyond Meat has hired a former executive at e-commerce giant Amazon as its COO.

Sanjay Shah, who spent seven years at Amazon, joins a business that listed in May and which is growing its presence at home and overseas.

Beyond Meat president and CEO Ethan Brown said: “Sanjay brings a wealth of experience in scaling and operating very high growth businesses, none more important in our consideration than Amazon, where Sanjay managed a majority percentage of North American fulfilment over the course of his career.”

Shah worked for Amazon between January 2011 and May 2018, holding roles including vice president for the retailer’s North American fulfilment centres.

His most recent position was senior vice president of energy operations at electric car upstart Tesla. Prior to Amazon, Shah was managing director for the south-east Asia operations of online manufacturing marketplace mfg.com. Between 2000 and 2009, he worked for computer giant Dell.

In July, Beyond Meat set out plans for an equity raise to invest in production and its supply chain.
