Quarantine and animal movement controls have been imposed by the Finnish government to prevent a further spread of the disease, which it says was contracted by two cows from contaminated feed. The OIE has reported that 37 other young cattle, 16 dairy cows and one bull are also at risk of catching the disease, which has not been found in Finland since 1988.

The latest outbreak was confirmed by tests at Finland’s National Food and Veterinary Research Institute.
