Former Mars executive Unkovic, who joined the California-based company in November 2017 as the firm’s president, replaced Berliner in the CEO role last summer. Berliner, who set up Amy’s Kitchen with his wife Rachel, became executive chairman.

Amy’s Kitchen has confirmed Mr. Berliner will once again be the company’s permanent CEO. Just Food has asked for comment on the reasons for Unkovic’s departure.

Some 15% of Amy’s Kitchen’s US$600m in annual sales are generated outside the US, with the company present in more than 25 countries.

In an interview with Just Food earlier this year, Unkovic suggested Amy Kitchen was aiming for international markets to account for 30% of its sales in five years’ time. “I’m very excited that in next five years, we should have 30% of all volumes and sales in the international market. I think in five years Amy’s should be over the $1bn mark.”

Amy’s Kitchen has four manufacturing plants in the US. Unkovic indicated the company wanted to set up production in Europe. The business opened a plant in the UK in 2011 before closing it three years later.
