Militant French farmer and anti-globalisation activist Jose Bove has been ordered back to jail for destroying a field of GM crops.

The Cour de Cassation, France’s most senior appeals court, ruled that Bove should go to jail for six months and pay a €7,622 (US$7,644) fine for attacking a filed of GM rice in 1999. He must also serve an eight-month sentence for an earlier attack on GM crops in France.
Bove’s lawyer said that several “personalities” were writing to the authorities asking for leniency toward the farmer.
Despite Bove’s defence arguing that fear of a health risk justifies taking the law into one’s own hands, judges ruled that Bove and his fellow protestors had many means of expression available in the country’s democratic society without attacking the crops, reported the Independent.
