Brittany’s struggling food firms are set to benefit from a EUR15m (US20.5m) package of emergency state aid to the region’s industry, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced.
In recent weeks a number of Brittany’s food firms – Doux, Gad, Marine Harvest and Jean Caby – have announced significant job losses and cutbacks in activity
amid poor market conditions.
The aid will be administered by state food and fisheries agency, AgriMer, on a case-by-case basis and is designed to take the pressure off of firms’ cash-flows.
However, Food minister, Guillaume Garot, has ruled out specific financial aid to Brittany poultry groups, Doux and Tilly-Sabco who have been hit hard by the European Commission’s decision to end subsidies to support exports outside the EU.
Yesterday, some supermarket outlets in Brittany closed their doors for one hour in a show of solidarity with the region’s food firms.
