A French tribunal has handed Carrefour Hypermarchés a fine of almost EUR3.7m (US$5.3m) fine for failing to respect minimum wage regulations.

The retail giant was convicted of the charge of “payment by an employer of a salary inferior to the monthly guaranteed minimum.”

The tribunal judged that Carrefour had omitted statutory rest breaks in calculating wages,  resulting in 1,200 Carrefour staff, working in 11  stores in France being underpaid by between EUR4 and EUR45 each month  

Commenting on the tribunal’s decision, Carrefour said that “all of its staff receive a monthly remuneration superior to the minimum wage”.

The group added that it would be lodging an appeal against the verdict.
