French retail giant Carrefour recorded an increase in sales in the second quarter and said business continued to improve at home.

In the three month period, consolidated sales climbed 1.3% to EUR20.5bn (US$26.87bn). The retailer recorded organic growth of 2.2%. In the first half, sales were up 1.3% to EUR41bn.

Carrefour said its hypermarkets business in France continued to recover and its other formats performed well in the period, despite the “challenging” environment.

Domestic same-store sales growth slowed to 1.1% in the quarter from 2.9% in the first. Net sales dropped 0.2% to EUR9.65bn, but were broadly flat on a reported basis.

The group said sales in Europe continued to be impacted by weak consumption, particularly in southern Europe, but growth continued in Latin America and sales in Asia returned to growth in the quarter. International sales were up 2.6% to EUR10.81bn.
