Carrefour is planning to cut 1,700 jobs at its head offices in France in order to remain competitive.
At total of 8,500 staff work at its HQs in France. The company says the job cuts are part of an internal re-organisation move focusing on re-deploying staff at supermarket outlets and will not involve compulsory redundancies.
The redeployment will be implemented on a gradual basis from the first quarter of 2006 to the end of 2007.
The CFDT staff union claims that Carrefour has already reduced its non-retail workforce in France with cutbacks in after sales service, accounting and IT.
